About This Role
This senior position oversees the safe, reliable and efficient operation of multiple power stations, ensuring compliance with safety, environmental and regulatory requirements.
You will lead a large operational team, maintain critical plant and equipment performance, champion a strong HSE culture, and manage emergency response readiness, including black‑start capability.
Success in this role requires strong stakeholder engagement, operational governance and the ability to influence outcomes in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide high‑level strategic advice and manage operational control of generation assets across the Northern Region via the ROC.
- Ensure safe, reliable and efficient production of electricity across the Darwin-Katherine Power System (DKPS), including Channel Island, Weddell and Katherine Power Stations.
- Lead and embed a positive HSE culture, ensuring safety and environmental KPIs are achieved.
- Build and maintain strong internal and external stakeholder relationships.
- Ensure plant reliability and performance under emergency conditions, including black‑start testing.
- Maintain robust emergency procedures, equipment and communications for a 24/7 response.
- Oversee the Permit to Work system, ensuring worker competency, incident investigation and closure of corrective actions.
- Lead plant failure reporting and root cause analysis to support defect elimination.
- Influence outage planning, resourcing and fuel management to optimise costs and reliability.
- Provide effective leadership to a 24/7 shift‑based team, ensuring performance management, fatigue management and roster optimisation.
- Demonstrated ability to provide high level strategic advice on and manage the operation and control of generation assets in the Northern Region and regional power stations through the Remote Operations Centre (ROC).
- High level strategic leadership and resource management skills with proven ability to lead and motivate a team in a high pressure, complex environment.
- Superior interpersonal skills particularly in communication, collaboration, negotiation, and conflict resolution in order to balance competing demands and influence outcomes.
- Demonstrated high level knowledge of and experience with the processes involved in the operation of an open and combined cycle gas fired power station. Demonstrated knowledge of heavy rotating equipment (gas turbines, compressors, electric motors and turbo-generators etc) and steam raising plant.
- Comprehensive power generation knowledge and experience, including relevant qualifications in the operation of gas turbines, reciprocating engines and associated plant and equipment or equivalent skills, knowledge and experience.
- Expert knowledge of Health Safety and Environment legislation with significant experience in safety management, environmental management and industrial relations and a commitment to safe working behaviours.
- Demonstrated ability to manage the operations functions of a 24/7/365 operations centre including coordinating production, operations and maintenance, utilising problem solving, risk management, decision making and developing and managing shift rosters.
- Demonstrated skills writing complex reports and procedures, which include but are not limited to: plant and safety incident reports, justification reports, root cause analysis investigations, periodic management reports explaining financial and nonfinancial performance etc.
- Ability to carry out duties in accordance with Territory Generation's safety, environmental and quality policy, safety principles, corporate values and strategies.
- Relevant electrical or mechanical engineering qualifications
- Experience working within isolated grid networks
- Knowledge of computer‑based work scheduling and management systems
